The Jeep Commander is the first Jeep to
have three rows of seats; it seats up to seven people. Sport and
Limited trim levels are available, as are three four-wheel-drive
systems. The Commander's competitors include the Toyota 4Runner,
Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Explorer.
For 2010, the Commander dropped its
4.7-liter V-8 engine and the Overland trim.
The Commander features an upright
windshield and rear window. Its angular sheet metal and vertical
side glass give it a classic Jeep profile and a rugged, upright,
military look.
- Standard body-colored door handles and front/rear
bumpers
- Standard power, heated mirrors
- Standard remote keyless entry
- 17- or 18-inch wheels
- Optional xenon headlamps
- Optional dual-panel sunroof

The SUV holds up to seven occupants on two
or three rows of seats. Each row is slightly higher than the one
ahead of it, enhancing forward visibility for rear occupants.
The second- and third-row seats fold forward to create a flat
load floor. A stepped roof provides headroom for rear occupants.
- Cloth, leather or perforated leather upholstery
- Wood-grain and leather-wrapped center console
- Standard air conditioning
- Optional dual-zone automatic climate control
- Standard power locks and windows
- Standard steering-wheel-mounted cruise control
- Standard eight-way power driver seat and optional
four-way power passenger seat
- Optional second-row overhead TV monitor and satellite
television

Three full-time four-wheel-drive systems
and two transfer cases are available. In ascending order of
ruggedness, Jeep calls its four-wheel-drive systems Quadra-Trac
I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II.
Hill descent control, which is designed to keep the SUV's speed
to a crawl when traversing difficult terrain, is optional. Hill
start assist is also optional; it keeps the Commander from
rolling backward on an incline. The 5.7-liter engine has a
multi-displacement system that alternates between four-cylinder
and V-8 mode for higher fuel efficiency.
- 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with 235 pounds-feet of
torque
- 357-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with 389 pounds-feet of
torque

Built on a car-based
platform shared with the Dodge Caliber, the
Compass is one of two front-wheel-drive models
from Jeep — the other being the compact Patriot.
Both cars are examples of why so-called
crossover vehicles are supplanting traditional
truck-based SUVs. Trim levels include the Sport
and better-equipped Limited.
Jeep's compact, car-based Compass lacks the
off-road chops its larger siblings boast, but it
can tread lightly off the beaten path thanks to
optional four-wheel drive. Compass competitors
include the Honda Element and Ford Escape.
The Compass looks like the
child of an older Liberty model and the current
Grand Cherokee. The doors have matching moldings
that dress up a deliberate accent groove.
Body-colored door handles are available, in
addition to standard black handles.

The 2010 Compass has only minor interior changes.
It now has an optional
automatic climate control. The interior features
a 60/40-split folding rear seat, plus an
optional power driver's seat, optional fold-flat
front passenger seat and optional power windows.
-
Standard air conditioning
-
Standard illuminated cupholders
-

The Compass and Patriot are
Jeep's first models with four-wheel-independent
suspensions. The brand's other SUVs retain a
solid rear axle, which offers advantages in some
off-road situations.
The Compass has floor and engine-compartment
silencers and an exhaust resonator that Jeep
says will provide a quieter ride. Suspension
tuning on Sport models is designed to provide a
smoother, more comfortable ride.

The Jeep Liberty, which is related to the Dodge Nitro, comes
in Sport and Limited editions. One of the more interesting
features in the five-seat Jeep Liberty small SUV is its optional
Sky Slider movable canvas roof. For 2010, the Liberty gets
a system that shuts off the engine when
decelerating to improve its gas mileage, as well
as an indicator on the dash to show when the
Liberty is being driven efficiently.
The Liberty features Jeep's
traditional seven-slot grille and trapezoidal
fender flares that enhance the vehicle's side
profile. Unlike many panoramic sunroofs offered
today, Jeep's Sky Slider roof is made of canvas
rather than glass. The fabric roof folds on
itself as it opens, and Jeep says the top is
leak-proof.
- Standard automatic headlamps
- Standard body-colored grille, front and
rear bumpers, and moldings
- Standard remote keyless entry
- Optional express-up windows
- Standard power, heated, folding mirrors
- 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels

tray. Both the left and right rear panels in the cargo
area have tie-down loops for securing items to
the load floor. The left rear panel houses a
concealed compartment for jack storage and
tools.

mirrors
- Standard floor mats
- Stain-resistant cloth or leather
upholstery available
- Optional heated, powered front seats
- Optional leather-wrapped steering wheel
with audio controls
- Optional hands-free communication system

For 2010, the Liberty gets
a standard fuel shut-off system that turns off
fuel when the vehicle is decelerating. There's
also a standard fuel-saving indicator that
lights up in the odometer to notify the driver
when the vehicle is being driven in a
fuel-efficient manner.All models come with a four-speed automatic
transmission. When properly equipped, the
Liberty can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber, the Patriot is
supposed to be the most rugged of the three. It
seats five people. To give its macho looks some

clearance and more. The Patriot comes in Sport

seven-slot grille, rounded headlights and

This off-roader emphasizes
rock-crawling over highway comfort, and when it
comes to hardcore trailblazing, it's rarely
matched. Trim levels include the Sport, Sahara
and Rubicon, as well as the four-door Unlimited.
The Wrangler was redesigned for
the 2007 model. For 2010, Jeep has changed the
name of
the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited base model
to
"Sport." Now standard in the Sport are fog
lamps, tow hooks, a compass and an outdoor
temperature gauge. It also comes equipped with a
soft-top that Jeep says is easier to remove,
plus an indicator that shows when you're driving
economically.
An available three-panel
hardtop has removable sections above the driver,
front passenger and rear passengers. The
standard soft-top has been redesigned for 2010
and now can be removed more easily, according to
the automaker. The side doors, available as full
or half-size, are removable, and the windshield
can be folded down.
- Standard 16-inch steel wheels
- Optional 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
- Optional 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
- Standard removable doors
- Standard fold-down windshield
- Standard full-size matching spare tire
mounted on rear gate

The thin-spoke steering
wheel has a circular hub, and a vertical center
control panel features a high-mounted radio with

seating
- Standard six-speaker sound system with
radio, CD player and MP3 jack
- Optional air conditioning
- Optional cruise control
- Optional power windows and locks
- Optional upgraded sound system

A 3.8-liter V-6 is the sole

Unlimited gets its own 3.8-liter V-6 with
slightly more horsepower and torque. Off-road
mainstays include a non-independent suspension
(solid front and rear axles) and a part-time
four-wheel-drive system with available dual
locking differentials.Other features include underbody skid plates, an
available tow package and an available
electronically disconnecting front stabilizer
bar for increased ground clearance. The Wrangler
Sport uses a standard four-wheel-drive system
incorporating a two-speed transfer case for
part-time use.
- 202-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6 with 237
pounds-feet of torque (Wrangler)
- 205-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 with 240
