Toxic Cars and The Passenger's Health
In today's world, all cars are made with chemicals that can lead to
health
problems.
Phthalates and brominated flame retardants are two such chemicals.
Phthalates make plastic soften and more pliable. Phthalates have
also been shown to cause liver and kidney damage in rodents. The
flame retardants can cause brain damage and thyroid problems.
Studies have shown that children raised in homes containing high
levels of phthalates in the dust are more likely to have asthma and
allergy problems.
When these chemicals are combined in a confined space, they could be
even worse on the system. But, research suggests that within about
6 months, the car has emitted most of the toxic chemicals that could
enter the air.
Exhaust leaks can be very serious.
Carbon monoxide can get into the passenger compartment. As many as
1 in 5 cars may have elevated levels of carbon monoxide. It can
cause headaches, nausea, or dizziness. Only 1% carbon monoxide to
99% of oxygen can kill the driver in less than 3 minutes.
Inspect your exhaust system, and if it looks rusty or moves when
pushed on, have it replaced. |
