Volvo brought a dose of style to the premium hatchback segment with the introduction of the C30 a few years ago. The car is based on Volvo's S40 sedan, and it receives new front-end styling for the 2011 model year that's designed to distinguish it from its sibling.

The C30 sports a changed front-end with a new hood, front fenders, headlights and grille. The two-door C30 has a glass hatch that gives a more open feel to the interior.

The Volvo C30 seats four passengers. Rear bucket seats are positioned slightly inward of the front seats, allowing more forward visibility. In front, the dashboard looks much like the S40's, with an ultra-thin center panel that incorporates climate and audio controls.

2011 Volvo C70

The Volvo C70 has redesigned the small hardtop convertible. There are some interior changes, but the biggest changes are to the car's exterior.

The nose is more wedge-shaped and there is a larger air intake up front while the back gets new LED taillights. Headlamp washers, 18-inch wheels and rear park assist are optional.

The instrument panel has more of a watch-dial design now and the center console is new. Leather is standard. Options include keyless drive, an integrated compass in the rearview mirror, heated front seats and light oak inlays for the interior.

The C70 is powered by a turbocharged 5-cylinder that produces 227 horsepower and is estimated to get 20/29 mpg city/highway. A 5-speed automatic is standard.

In addition to the required dual front airbags, side-impact and side curtain airbags are standard. Volvo says the curtains are designed to stay deployed in the event of a rollover. Traction control and an electronic stability system are standard.

2010 Volvo S40

The Volvo S40 is their smallest sedan. It is available in 2 trim levels: 2.4i and T5 R-Design. The T5 R-Design is offered in all-wheel and front-wheel drive. The T5 gets more power by turbocharging the same inline-5 found in the 2.4i.

Volvo brought back the 5-speed manual transmission and made it standard on the 2.4i trim. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the all-wheel-drive version of the T5 R-Design.

The standard upholstery in the 5-occupant interior has a slightly coarse, woven feel that's said to be inspired by sportswear. Leather upholstery is available. T5 R-Design trims come with unique leather seating surfaces, aluminum sport pedals, a sport shift knob, and a sport steering wheel. Aluminum trim is standard on both the 2.4i and the T5 R-Design; Nordic Light Oak trim is optional.

The rear seatbacks fold down separately, and the front passenger seat's backrest also folds flat. Passenger volume comes in at 92.5 cubic feet. Cargo volume is a relatively small 12.6 cubic feet.

The S40 comes standard with an inline 5-cylinder engine, while the T5 R-Design gets a turbocharged unit. Each trim has its own transmission: the 2.4i sports a five-speed manual with an available automatic, the T5 R-Design makes the five-speed automatic standard with no manual option, and the T5 AWD R-Design model comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed automatic.

The S40 has quite a list of standard safety features, including automatic hazard warning lights that turn on when the airbags deploy.

2011 Volvo S60

The 2011 Volvo S60 is a 300 hp sedan that features some advanced technology for safety which includes pedestrian detection and automatic braking which can bring the car to a stop from up to 22 miles per hour.

There was no S60 for 2010, but it has been redesigned for 2011. Along with all-new exterior and interior styling, the S60 features a new 300-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder and is all-wheel drive.

The S60's new stance, flowing lines and low roofline create a stylish luxury car. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard, but smaller 17-inch rims are available. A Premium Package includes a power moonroof and adaptive xenon headlights.

The S60 has room for five on front bucket seats and a 60/40-split folding backseat. The front passenger seat also folds flat to make it easier to carry long items. The S60 also features Volvo's floating center control panel that can be finished in aluminum or wood.

Standard features include automatic climate control, cruise control, heated side mirrors, Bluetooth cell phone connectivity and a CD stereo with auxiliary and USB ports. Available options include rain-sensing windshield wipers, a navigation system and a premium audio system with a DVD player.

The S60 is powered by a 300-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6-cylinder. This engine teams with a 6-speed automatic transmission and drives all four wheels through the S60's all-wheel-drive system. The Volvo Four-C adaptive suspension is optional.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, side-impact airbags for the front seats, side curtain airbags, an electronic stability system and active front head restraints. City Safety, Volvo's system designed to lessen the severity or prevent altogether a rear-end collision with another vehicle, is also standard.

Along the same lines as City Safety is the optional Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, which can prevent collisions where the difference in speed is 22 mph or less — including ones where a pedestrian is involved. Additional options include Lane Departure Warning, a blind-spot monitoring system, and front and rear parking sensors.

2010 Volvo S80

The Volvo S80 comes in 3.2, T6 and V8 trims. All-wheel drive is also available.

The S80 is now has a more curved line and a sleeker, sporty appearance. Exterior dimensions come in at 191.0 inches long and 73.3 inches wide.

The S80's center controls sit on a thin metal panel pioneered in the S40 compact sedan. Luxurious touches include standard real wood trim with an optional wood steering wheel, optional massaging front seats and a rear refrigerator with two crystal glasses. The back bench has a standard 60/40-split folding function for increased cargo capacity. Passenger volume comes in at 97.7 cubic feet. Cargo space is 14.9 cubic feet, which is more than the 528 and 9-5 but lags behind the A6.

The S80 is the first Volvo sedan with an available V-8 engine. The Volvo S80 has a turbocharged 6-cylinder in the T6 trim, which sits between the base six-cylinder and the top-of-the-line V8 trim level. All three engines use a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift functionality. All-wheel drive is standard with the V-8 and turbo six-cylinder; the base 6-cylinder gets front-wheel drive.

In addition to the standard safety features, available safety features include a blind spot warning system, which checks adjacent lanes for unnoticed cars, and a collision warning system that monitors the speed of traffic ahead and warns drivers of impending rear-end collisions.

2010 Volvo V50

Volvo's small wagon, the V50, comes in 2.4i and T5 R-Design trim levels, the latter of which is only available with all-wheel drive. Competitors include the Audi A4 Avant, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport and Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen.

The T5 R-Design gets a standard six-speed manual transmission; a five-speed automatic is optional.

The V50's looks are similar to its S40 sibling. A V-shaped hood bulge runs down into a sculpted nose, and there's a broad lower air intake. T5 R-Design models come with a standard sporty appearance package called R-Design, which includes a different grille, a sport body kit with body-colored side skirts, and front and rear spoilers.

An inline-five-cylinder engine is standard on either model, and high-performance T5 R-Design editions employ a turbocharger for more power. The T5 R-Design also comes standard with all-wheel drive and a sport suspension.

Though its sister model, the S40 sedan, earned Good frontal-offset and rear crash-test scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the wagon hasn't been tested. Unfortunately, differences in weight and construction mean we can't assume the same crash-test performance in the V50.
